What Will Twitter Do To Google?

Right now, Twitter is probably the hottest thing on the web. Twitter has been gaining ground over the last few months. Twitter now has millions of users. People are spending more time on twitter than any other site (even me). Nowadays, whenever I need to know some news or details about anything, I usually go to Twitter first and use their search feature. And a lot of times, I have found the answers to my questions. More people are turning to twitter for finding jobs, getting to know others, etc. Twitter is a brilliant concept, but will Twitter and its search facility replace Google?

I don’t think so. While Google is used for searching for information and links, Twitter is used as a social media tool. But over the past few weeks, I have been using twitter for finding stuff for which I would usually have used Google. So, I think Twitter will have a moderate effect on Google. With twitter, one can easily find information and on the topic of his choice. And since everything on twitter is limited to 140 characters, I think Twitter will be more useful. And the user can also connect with people who are interested in the same topic.

So, here’s my conclusion : Twitter will affect Google. People will turn to twitter for finding an apartment, or finding help on how to feed their cat, and keeping up with the latest buzz. Google will be used for finding information.  But since Twitter is a network of people whereas Google results are collected by bots not humans, I believe Google will be affected by Twitter atleast a little. But Twitter will not completely replace Google.

What are your thoughts about this? Please share them with me in the comments below.

I don’t think so it will affect Google, maybe a small effect only.
There are many reasons why i say so.

    Anyways, well written post.

I never really thought about Twitter having any affect on Google until after reading this post. And now that you mention it I also find myself looking for things on Twitter more often than I would search around for them on Google also. Great Post!

Great post. Personally I think that Twitter and Google are totally different, so it seems to be a bit weird to compare them. That said, Google always have been bigger and always will be.

Awesome looking site btw, very fresh :)

Totally agree on you Ganesh. Twitter will effect Google but its not going to replace it or its Search Engine.
Twitter is good for information, updates and gossips. But lets say Are you going to search for Eminem’s mp3 song on twitter? rofl :D I think I made my point clear.

@Simon - Thanks for commenting on my blog.

I agree, Google is bigger, but Twitter is definitely having an impact on it. Many people are nowadays going to Twitter search instead of Google search because twitter is built by real people who are interested in a particular topic whereas you never know what kind of sites can turn up in a Google search results.

And in Twitter, you just jump into a conversation about the topic you are looking for right away.

BTW, I’m glad you liked the theme. But it requires some stuff like a subscription box, etc. :D

@Enk - I agree. There are some things that you definitely cannot search on twitter. But you can easily find out what others are thinking about some book or movie, etc.

Im not sure I would agree on this one. Twitter and Google are two completely different monsters playing two different kinds of game. Although twitter is the “in” these days, don’t think it would have negative impact on Google, and its search engine itself

Nice blog you have here Ganesh. But its idle from a long time, can’t wait to see your next Post.

@Ganesh, yeah, I sort of agree with you, but I just can’t see Twitter ever challenging Google when it comes to searching. It *might* stand a small chance of webmasters using the search, but normal people will carry on going for Google.

Anyway, ‘twitter it’ doesn’t have the same ring as ‘google it’ ;) lol

BTW, you should install threaded comments, makes it much easier/less confusing than all the ‘@’ replies. :)
